How to Sign a California Car Title When Selling Your Vehicle

Where to Sign the Title

Be sure to write clearly and sign/print your name exactly as spelled on the front of your title. Avoid white-out, scribbles, and strike-throughs.

  • 1. Front of title - on line 1a, sign above "Signature of Registered Owner"
  • 2. Front of title - below odometer section sign in the box where it reads "Transferor/ Seller Signature(s)"

However, for cars 10 years and older, disregard the last step and only sign line 1a.

Multiple Owners

Only one owner must sign if the title states “OR” between the owner names printed on the front of the title.

However both owners must sign if the title states “AND” or “AND/OR” between owner names, or if nothing is listed between owner names.

Lien or Bank Name on Title

Additionally, if your California title shows a lien from a bank, finance company, or private lender in the front, lower-left corner, your title will need to be signed off by the lien holder or include a separate lien release letter.

No Title In Hand

If your vehicle is currently registered and titled in California but the title is missing, you can complete an Application for Duplicate Title. The registration card and completed Duplicate Title form will suffice for the sale of your vehicle to a dealer or private party.

Specific Mistakes to Avoid

  • X Seller signing the back instead of the front
  • X Missing seller signature on front → DMV rejection
  • X Cross-outs or white-out → invalid title
  • X Name mismatch (nicknames, missing middle initials, etc.)

California DMV Protection (Critical)

  • Submit Notice of Transfer & Release of Liability immediately
  • Keep a photo of the signed title (front & back)
  • Take a photo of the buyer’s ID (for private party sale)
  • Complete a Bill of Sale for each party to the sale (for private party sale)
